Beginning on November 3, 2017, Canada's second-largest airline, WestJet, will begin operating its brand-new non-stop flight from the international airport in Calgary, Alberta (YYC) to the Philip Goldson international airport in Belize City (BZE).
The new Calgary-Belize route will be operated once per week and will continue throughout the 2017/18 winter season. The Calgary-Belize route is WestJet's second foray into the lucrative Belize travel market, the airline already operating a non-stop flight from Toronto's Pearson International Airport (YYZ) to Belize since October 2016.
Arch rival Air Canada, the country's largest airline, responded to WestJet's new routes by announcing that it will begin flying from Toronto Belize beginning on December 15, 2017. Flight times from both Toronto and Calgary to Belize average around five and a half hours. Canadians with a valid passport do not need a visa to visit Belize for up to 30 days.
Belize is a small country located on the mainland of Central America but with a long Caribbean coastline and more than 100 offshore islands. The country has the lowest population density in the region and is a wonderland of pristine rivers, lush rainforests, verdant jungles teeming with exotic wildlife, and vast protected marine areas that are popular locations for snorkeling, swimming, fishing, and sailing.
As the only country in the area where English is the official language, Belize is very accessible for Canadians. And thanks to its geographic location, the winter months in Belize are a time of abundant sunshine and balmy temperatures perfect for exploring the great outdoors, swimming, or simply lounging by the beach.
