The eco-tourism capital of Belize, San Ignacio, located in the country's beautiful western Cayo District, was recently given a top rating by the world's most popular travel website, TripAdvisor. Based on the weighted rankings of its millions of users, TripAdvisor gave high marks for two destinations in Belize, San Ignacio and the island of Ambergris Caye, ranking the latter as one of the top 25 destinations to visit in Central America.
San Ignacio and its sister town across the river Santa Elena serve as the gateway to the pristine nature of the western part of the country. San Ignacio its famous for its colorful open air market on the banks of the Macal River where local farmers and artisans come to swap gossip and sell a dazzling variety of fresh local produce, dairy, handicrafts, souvenirs, and even traditional medicines.
