placencia belize

Placencia is located in the Stann Creek District of Belize

The most popular tourist destination in southeastern Belize is the lovely Placencia Peninsula, a 16-mile long strip of sand and sun bordered on one side by the Caribbean Sea and the other by a mangrove-lined lagoon.

At the tip of the peninsula is Placencia Village, once a quiet fishing town and now a burgeoning center where visitors can enjoy a delicious meal, sip on a coffee, shop for souvenirs, or find diving gear and boat crews to head out to the nearby Belize Barrier Reef. Despite its growing popularity, Placencia Village holds the Guinness Book of World Records for the smallest main street on the planet, a 4,000-foot long sidewalk that measures just four feet wide. The village was founded by English pirates in the early 1600s and has been inhabited ever since.

As you walk north from the village, you’ll be heading towards the less-developed part of the peninsula. Long stretches of secluded beach, gorgeous views of the Caribbean, excellent fishing opportunities in the lagoon, and some of the higher end resorts are located on this part of the peninsula.

Things to See & Do in Placencia

One of the most popular attractions in Placencia is fishing. Fly fishers can rent kayaks to head out to some of the nearby cayes (islands) in a quest to achieve a Grand Slam. Closer to land, spin casting and trolling are popular past-times for serious anglers looking to hook some of the biggest tarpon, permit fish, bone fish, and snook in the world.

Just a few miles out from Placencia is the Belize Barrier Reef, the second-largest coral reef in the world. Snorkeling and diving opportunities abound in some of the clearest waters in the world that abound with a rich multitude of colorful marine flora and fauna.

Placencia is located close to some of the top attractions on the mainland, including a leisurely boat trip up the scenic Monkey River, an excursion to the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Preserve, home to some of the last remaining native jaguars in Central America.
