In a recent release by the famous travel website TripAdvisor, the small town of San Ignacio in Belize's western Cayo District was listed as a Top 10 Destination in Central America. Coming in at number seven on the list, TripAdvisor extols the capital of Cayo District as a great base for "budget-friendly adventure travel," giving the town high marks thanks to positive feedback garnered from thousands of comments and ratings from the TripAdvisor community.
"We are quite honored that San Ignacio was recognized by TripAdvisor," said Lloyd Alvarez, reservations manager at the Cahal Pech Resort. "It's one of the most beautiful towns in all of Belize and we hope that more visitors will get a chance to see this very special place."
Originally a small municipality hosting a community of mahogany loggers along with its sister town Santa Elena on the other side of the Macal River, San Ignacio Town has blossomed in recent years to become a thriving destination for eco-tourists interested in hiking, zip lining and seeing wildlife as well as visitors interested in exploring nearby Maya ruins like Caracol, Xunantunich, and Tikal just over the border in Guatemala.
Downtown San Ignacio boasts more than a dozen restaurants featuring everything from local cuisine to Sri Lankan food and outstanding steaks. The small but vibrant town is also home to one of the country's most popular open air markets where traders come from all over the country to sell handicrafts, local foods, and trade gossip.
