Birthdays are usually a big thing and in Belize, after a two-year hiatus due to the dreadful pandemic locals are ecstatic to come outside and celebrate Belize’s 41 birthday in a big way, with energy, pride,and patriotism.
This year’s winning September team ‘’Valiant and Bold Proud and Strong! Belize Rebounds @ 41,’’ which was submitted by a primary school teacher speaks of the valiantness and boldness of the Belizean people as well as their pride and resiliency through the pandemic. ‘’We are proud. We are strong. The pandemic caused me to think about this one, and I said no, we are making a comeback. We are doing it. This is Belize. This is who we are,” said the author of the theme.
The September festivities, usually lasting for an entire month are known to be the most festive season of the year for locals. It is also the ideal time to visit and experience how a country filled with a melting pot of cultures, traditions, and beliefs comes together to celebrate the place they call home. This is done through several festivities, activities, and celebrations that reverberate around patriotism, including parades, carnivals, concerts, fireworks, and other functions and official ceremonies.
Among the biggest events is the annual Carnival Road march which was held in the first week of September and saw scores of people, and revelers coming out to participate. The colorful array of carnival costumes, though each ranging in style and ideas, reflected the pandemic, struggles, and victory that the Belizean people had to endure. Backed up by patriotic music, the carnival road march made its way through the streets of Belize City as participants and spectators alike moved to the festive beats.
In observance of the Battle of St George’s Caye which is celebrated on September 10th, every municipality across the country will host their own official ceremonies and parades throughout their respective towns and village. These parades are known to contain colorful costumes, floats, and patriotic music depicting all things Belizeans. It is dubbed a public and bank holiday to commemorate the victory in a key battle against the Spaniards who had attempted to invade Belize in 1798.
The highlight of the celebration however is September 21st, which is observed as Belize’s birthday, the day the country was able to secure full independence from the United Kingdom. To celebrate this major milestone event, Belizeans from across the country do what they do best — parade and dance through the streets in every major town and village.
