Five Days in San Ignacio: An Adventure Itinerary

The Cayo District holds the greatest concentration of adventures in Belize: sacred caves, ancient Maya cities, jungle rivers, waterfalls and a lively riverside town to come home to. The challenge is not finding enough to do. It is fitting the best of it into one trip. Five days is the sweet spot: enough time for the icons, a little room to breathe, and one hilltop base so you never repack a bag.

Here is our field tested five day adventure itinerary, built around Cahal Pech Village Resort in San Ignacio. Days can be shuffled to match tour schedules and weather, and our tour desk will handle every booking.

  1. Day One: Arrive, Settle In and Meet the Ancients

san ignacio belize

Land at the international airport and make the easy two hour drive west to San Ignacio, where your hilltop cabana at Cahal Pech Village Resort is waiting. After lunch and a swim, walk five minutes to the ancient Maya city of Cahal Pech, one of the oldest known Maya sites in western Belize. Wander its shaded plazas and temples as an appetizer for the days ahead, then head into town for dinner on Burns Avenue and an early night. Adventure starts tomorrow.

  1. Day Two: The ATM Cave, Belize's Legendary Adventure

Go big on day two with Actun Tunichil Muknal, the sacred cave that adventure travelers cross the world for. With a licensed guide you will hike the rainforest, swim into the cave mouth and wade through underground chambers to a ceremonial gallery where ancient Maya offerings, ceramics and calcified remains rest exactly where they were left more than a thousand years ago. It is physical, humbling and unforgettable. Return to the resort for a well earned float in the swimming pools and dinner with a view.

  1. Day Three: Xunantunich and a Lazy River Afternoon

Start the morning crossing the Mopan River on the hand cranked ferry at San Jose Succotz, then climb El Castillo at Xunantunich for the most famous panorama in western Belize, with views stretching into Guatemala. Back down the hill, spend the afternoon the slow way: cave tubing on a gentle jungle river or canoeing the Macal, drifting past iguanas and kingfishers. Cap the day with a swim and sunset cocktails on the hilltop.

  1. Day Four: Mountain Pine Ridge or the Road to Caracol

 Mountain Pine Ridge waterfalls

Day four heads into the highlands, and you have a glorious choice. Option one: a waterfall day in Mountain Pine Ridge, swimming beneath Big Rock Falls, hopping the granite pools at Rio On and exploring the Rio Frio Cave. Option two: the full expedition to Caracol, the largest ancient Maya city in Belize, deep in the Chiquibul rainforest, with waterfall stops woven in on the way home. Either way, pack a swimsuit and a big appetite for the picnic lunch.

  1. Day Five: Market Morning, Iguanas and One Last View

San-Ignacios-Farmers-Market

Ease off the throttle on your final day. If it is Saturday, browse the famous farmers market on the riverbank for fruit, street food and souvenirs. Visit the Green Iguana Conservation Project, stroll Burns Avenue for coffee and crafts, and cross the old Hawksworth Bridge for a classic photo. Back on the hilltop, take one last swim and one last long look over the Belize River Valley before your transfer, or better yet, add a few island days and make it the classic jungle then reef Belize trip.

  1. Tips to Make the Five Days Sing

Belize Maya sites

Book the ATM Cave first, since daily permits are limited, and build the other days around it. Mornings are best for temple climbs and highland trips, so save afternoons for rivers and pools. Pack quick dry clothing, water shoes, sturdy sneakers, insect repellent and a dry bag. And leave a little flexibility: our front desk watches the weather and tour schedules daily and will happily shuffle your lineup so every day lands perfectly.

  1. Why One Base Beats Five Hotels

Cahal Pech Village Resort Belize

Every adventure in this itinerary starts within minutes to ninety minutes of San Ignacio, which is exactly why savvy travelers base in one place and day trip everywhere. At Cahal Pech Village Resort you unpack once, sleep in the same comfortable cabana every night, and end every adventure the same way: a swim in the pools, dinner at our restaurant and sunset over the valley from the best perch in town.

Your Five Day Adventure Starts on the Hilltop

Caves, temples, waterfalls, rivers, markets and monkeys: five days in San Ignacio delivers a lifetime highlight reel. All it needs is the right home base. Cahal Pech Village Resort puts the whole itinerary at your doorstep, with our tour desk ready to arrange every guide, permit and transfer before you arrive.

Ready for five days of adventure? Book your stay at Cahal Pech Village Resort today and let the adventure begin.
