Belize participates in the Pack for a Purpose program, which means your next visit can have a positive impact on communities in the country. With just a small amount of space in your suitcase, you can make a big difference.
What Is Pack for a Purpose?
It is an organization founded by Rebecca Rothney. Rothney, a former schoolteacher, used to travel often to Africa. During one visit in 2000, she visited a local school and learned that students needed school supplies.
Before her next trip, she rounded up enough donations to fill two suitcases, which she brought on her next trip. That led to the founding of Pack with a Purpose in 2009.
How It Works
To participate, you don’t have two bring two suitcases full of donations. Just make a little room in one suitcase to squeeze in school, first aid, or other supplies that local communities need.
Once you arrive at your hotel, tell the concierge that you’ve brought donations for Pack for a Purpose. Typically, hotels that participate in the program collect all these donations in a single location. Later, they distribute the donations to community groups.
What Donations Does Belize Need?
Cahal Pech Village Resort is proud to sponsor Sacred Heart Primary School in San Ignacio Town. This primary school educates about 600 primary school students.
The school needs school supplies of all kinds:
• book bags
• chalk
• colored pencils, and crayons
• colored construction paper
• hand-held pencil sharpeners
• college-ruled paper
• solar calculators
• protractors
• pens, pencils, and pencil cases
• glue sticks
• compasses
• markers
• English-language reference books
• English-language flash cards for learning the alphabet, math, and words
• solar lantern lights
• wide-ruled paper
• first aid items, including antibiotic ointment, band-aids, and sanitary napkins.
To save space in your suitcase, remove these items from their original plastic packaging: pens, pencils, erasers, pencil sharpeners, solar calculators, and protractors. Wrap them in paper or fabric.
Leave crayons, chalk, and colored pencils in their original packaging. Please note that many countries, including Belize, have banned single-use plastics.
