The Mopan River is one of the best rivers to take a swim, go canoeing, or inner tubing in western Belize. It originates in Guatemala and merges with the Macal River in Branch Mouth (which is approximately 20 minutes away from San Ignacio Town) to form the Belize River.
Not far away from Cahal Pech Village Resort is Xunantunich Maya Ruins and travellers who want to visit this popular archaeological site have to cross this same river in a ferry.
It is important to note that the Mopan River/Belize River catchment contains over 45 percent of the human population of Belize and is a crucial source of drinking water and domestic use for Belizeans.
