On June 26-28, 2019, the Belize National Institute of Culture and History (NICH) will host the 17th annual Belize Archeology Symposium at the San Ignacio Resort Hotel in San Ignacio, Belize. This year's special topic will be: "From The Early Formative To The Postclassic in Northern and Southern Belize: Challenges to the Narrative in Ancient Maya Civilization."

Admittance for the symposium is $10 BZD for residents and $20 BZD for non-residents. Registration will open at 7:30 AM on each day of the symposium. Pre-registration is heartily encouraged and attendance is by invitation only. For more information, contact the Institute of Archeology at 822-2106 or by email at research@nichbelize.org.

The modern day nation of Belize is located in what was once the heartland of the ancient Maya civilization. Once dominating the region from today's Mexico down to El Salvador, the ancient Maya boasted a population of approximately one million people who constructed thousands of monuments, temples, and pyramids.

The annual Belize Archeology Symposium will present a number of papers as well as keynote addresses by scholars. In attendance will be both professional and amateur persons interested in Belizean archaeology as well as student and research groups interested in archaeology and the ancient history of Belize. Last year's symposium discussed architecture and design in ancient Maya society as well as the results of active archeological excavations in Belize.

Cahal Pech Village Resort

Located just minutes from the town of San Ignacio and the location of the Belize Archeology Symposium, Cahal Pech Village Resort offers guests lovely accommodations in thatched-roof cabanas, a gourmet restaurant, swimming pool, and professional spa services.

Named for the nearby Maya site of Cahal Pech, the resort is offering a 20% discount to symposium participants.

June is an outstanding month to visit Belize with many unique festivals, including celebrations to commemorate the opening of the lobster fishing season that feature dozens of innovative and tasty lobster dishes. With far less crowding than the busy winter months, June in Belize is a great time for visitors to explore nearby ancient Maya ruins in Belize like Caracol, Xunantunich, and Tikal just across the border in neighboring Guatemala.

Other nearby attractions include bird watching, wildlife spotting, exploring extensive cave networks, horseback riding, canoeing, and zip lining through the jungle canopy. The nearby Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve is home to some of the country's only broadleaf forests as well as an astounding collection of majestic waterfalls and panoramic views.

Questions about visiting Belize for the Belize Archeology Symposium? Send us an email or call 239- 494- 3281. We will love to help you plan your Belize vacation.
