Is San Ignacio Town Family Friendly? Here's Why The Answer Is Yes

San Ignacio Town might be a small metropolitan area, but it has become a popular tourist destination in recent years. The town is one of Belize's most diverse areas with Creoles, Chinese, Lebanese, Mestizos, and Mennonite indigenous groups living here. As a result, you can expect to experience different cultures and traditions.

Why Visit San Ignacio as a Family?

There's much to do and numerous sightseeing areas in San Ignacio with exciting options like ancient Mayan cities, nature parks and reserves, and unique jungle and rainforest activities. Here are some of the things you MUST do in San Ignacio:

Visit a Maya Archaeological Site

The western part of Belize and its environs are home to a staggering number of amazing Maya sites. Visit at least one of these amazing sites during your family vacation to Belize. Some of the most well-known are Xunantunich, Caracol, and Cahal Pech. These are some of the sites in Belize that offer fascinating insights into the pre-Columbian Maya culture. For example, with approximately 25 temples, Xunantunich is the second-highest temple in the country and is only 15 minutes from San Ignacio Town.

Take a Tour to the Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave

You'll find so many caves on this side of Belize, and most of them are children-friendly, so you can tag along with the entire family. One of the most-visited caves is Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM), which offers quite an adventure. Experience this as you watch ancient pottery, and learn about the sacred Maya rites as you crawl through the narrow passageways.

Explore Barton Creek Cave

Barton Creek Cave is another great option for visitors with children and those who are looking for a mesmerizing Belize caving experience. The cave offers so much history and culture since it is one of the Maya's ancient sites where human sacrifices were performed. It also has some antique pottery.

Visit Tikal in Guatemala

Your trip to San Ignacio won't be complete without an exquisite visit to Tikal, the biggest Maya site in Guatemala. Get your family to spend a full day on this excursion in Guatemala. It will be well worth seeing the biggest metropolis and epicenter of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization.

Go Cave Tubing and Ziplining with the Family

Ziplining is one of the most thrilling family activities in San Ignacio. Nothing compares to ziplining through a green lush jungle! For this, there are numerous spots in various parts of Belize. Most of the zipline options also add a cave tubing excursion to the day tour. There are also a handful of cave tubing places you can visit with your family if you'd prefer to do so, including Caves Branch, St. Hermans Cave and Inland Blue Hole, and Nohoch Che'en Caves.
