The mighty Sibun River in Belize drains a large central portion of the country and starts in the Maya Mountains at approximately 800 meters above sea level. The river travels a little over 50 miles from source to mouth, and the many twists and turns translates into over 100 miles of actual river.
It is interesting to note that Xibun is an alternate Mayan spelling of Sibun and appears on some Spanish colonial-period maps of the region.
