Right now more than 100 websites and blogs on the Internet are talking about Belize's great Blue Hole which according to a scientific report on Livescience.com offers sedimentary evidence that the collapse of the ancient Maya Civilization was due to a 100 year drought.

Livescience.com first published the report on December 24th 2014 and up to now, the story has been featured on popular sites like Yahoo.com, Huffingtonpost.com, Time.com, and Nbcnews.com putting Belize on the map.

André Droxler, an earth scientist at Rice University in Houston was the point man who led the research which discovered that extracted minerals from the blue hole and lagoons that surround it offer evidence of a drought that happened between A.D. 800 and A.D. 900 — a period that coincides with the Mayan decline.

"When you have major droughts, you start to get famines and unrest," Dr Droxler told LiveScience.com who believes that the 100 year drought is one of the best theories that explains the collapse of the Maya civilization.

The great blue hole is one of the top attractions in the western hemisphere and is located off the coast of Belize near the center of the Lighthouse Reef.

It is not only a world class destination for diving but also a rich habitat for a variety of marine life like nurse sharks, reef sharks, black tip sharks and even giant groupers.

If you want to see the "Great Blue Hole" for yourself, get to Belize as soon as you can. The country's reef system, which includes Lighthouse Reef, is on the "UNESCO In Danger" list as one of the sites that may soon disappear.
