One of the most popular jumping-off points for exploring the rest of the Belize Barrier Reef, Caye Caulker is the epitome of a tropical island with gorgeous white sandy beaches and palm trees swaying in the breeze.
Located in southeastern Belize in Stann Creek District, Placencia is a 16-mile long north-south peninsula that is less than a mile wide. The inner side of the peninsula is a pristine, mangrove-lined lagoon popular with fishermen, but it is the golden sands on the peninsula’s Caribbean side that have made it one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country.
A bustling village named after a popular Catholic priest that served as a missionary in the area, the village of Hopkins is perhaps most famous for its large population of Garifuna people. An Afro-Caribbean culture, the Garifuna have been recognized by the United Nations for their unique contributions of music, dance, and language.
Hopkins village is nestled on the coast of southeastern Belize in Stann Creek District. Split into two parts by a gorgeous bay, the beaches of Hopkins have a gorgeous view of both the Caribbean as well as the nearby Maya Mountains.
In Belize, islands are known as “cayes” (pronounced “keys”), and the three Silk Cayes have some of the best beaches found in the Belize Barrier Reef. The Silk Cayes, along with Gladden Spit, are part of an enormous marine reserve located in the central part of the reef. Measuring some 26,000 acres in size, the reserve is notable for having some of the most pristine sections of the reef, making it a haven for snorkelers and divers.
